Summary: The present invention relates to a system and method of extracting, separating and purifying shikimic acid from Himalayan pine (Pinus roxburghiiSarg.) needles. The two techniques used for extraction of shikimic acid from pine needles are (i) Conventional or Soxhlet extraction (ii) Microwave assisted extraction. The three types of solvents, i.e. methanol, water and ethanol, were used for extraction purpose owing to their better extraction capability (methanol and ethanol) and low cost (water).
